I know a lot about food and cooking ā€“ particularly about healthy, plant-based diets. I'm a graduate of The Natural Gourmet Institute, the country's leading culinary school for health supportive cooking. Before I went to culinary school, I was a professional photographer for many years. I took millions of pictures of food - everything from mile-high pancakes for a running magazine to just-picked corn for a book on the Greenmarket. I've worked with kids, teaching them about cooking and eating healthy meals, and I volunteer in New York City food pantries. Iā€™m also very active in The New York Women's Culinary Alliance.

I'm part of the first generation that grew up on a processed food diet. A typical day's diet for me as a kid included a Pop Tart for breakfast washed down with a Diet Coke, grape jelly on white bread for lunch, and fried chicken with instant mashed potatoes for dinner.  While my mom was a good cook, she was a product of her time - Twinkies, TV dinners and SpaghettiOs were always in the pantry and freezer When I was older, I became a vegetarian, and a bad one at that. I ate a lot of pasta and bread with an occasional green leafy vegetable. I was totally misguided.

It wasn't until I was feeling really crappy for a very long time that I made the connection that food could be a tool for healing.  I had been diagnosed with an autoimmune condition and had the worst GERD ever. I had bad bones for my age, gastrointestinal issues,  brain fog, and a laundry list of other minor ailments you don't want to hear about.  To put it mildly, I was not aging gracefully. I went to doctor after doctor who wanted to assign pill after pill for each of my ailments.  Not once did any of them mention the cause of any of my problems. Not once did any of them mention that I might want to change my diet.

I started to read more and more about food as medicine. After I completed The Chef's Training Program at The Natural Gourmet Institute,  everything started making sense. I knew how to make myself healthy by cooking and eating mindfully. Today, I feel terrific and have none of the symptoms I had before.
